  37.     Having sat back and passively read and enjoyed the net for a
  38.     while, I thought I might as well write in and report and some odd
  39.     thoughts before dialing in for the news this time.

  41.     THE PROGRAMMABLE BBS has retired at it's old location in Novato
  42.     CA. Many thanks to our system operator Levi who provided the
  43.     hardware and his time and efforts.  Thanks also to the North Bay
  44.     Forth Interest Group for funding the cost of installation of the
  45.     phone line and the first two or so months of phone charges.  To
  46.     all those who called in, please stay tuned for a new phone number.

  48.     Tomorrow, Sunday I have an appointment with a long time Forth
  49.     Programmer named John Cassady and his son, here at my home.  I
  50.     will demonstrate the use of EZY.COM a share ware BBS system that
  51.     offers QWK mail packets and doors.  John has volunteered his
  52.     interest in running the system on his hard ware in Oakland CA.
  53.  
  54.     Switching to EZY.COM, from the Wild Cat System, will finally allow
  55.     the "Programmable BBS" to be somewhat programmable.  The new
  56.     program has source for the menus and the command structure of the
  57.     menus.  These items can be put on line.  Also on line will be a
  58.     menu program called ANSI DRAW which builds menus and another
  59.     program called DOORWAY which some how sets up a door.  Both
  60.     doorway and ezy.com use a Fossil driver.  Our next step(s) will be
  61.     to get the door system to be operational and on line.

  63.     The purpose of the DOOR program is to allow a DOS program to be
  64.     run remotely.  For example there is a Forth Language BBS that is
  65.     called F-BBS. It is compiled on F-PC and includes source.  With
  66.     the door in operation F-PC could be one of the choices on the
  67.     menu.  Other programs have been submitted.

  69.     They are "Baby" from B0b Lee and "The Fig Tree BBS" from Mary Bell
  70.     aka Lady Bacardi.  "Ariel BBS" from Al Mitchell (not the author?)

  82.     IMO Jeff Fox's dissertations on the evolving of the P-21 chip and
  83.     his exchanges with Charles Moore are highly enlightening and very
  84.     interesting and are of the type of message that I want to
  85.     encourage here on the net.  Keep it up Jeff!  :-)

  87.     At the last Silicon Valley meeting Chuck brought his latest chip
  88.     which he demonstrated.  It had no case and was powered by a
  89.     variable voltage heath kit power supply.  The power leads were
  90.     pushed in to plated through holes with out benefit of solder.

  92.     Chuck answered my question by saying "if you solder them then you
  93.     have to unsolder them when you want to move them" The chip was
  94.     very reluctant to fire up and had to be prompted numerous times
  95.     (50 or 100 times) by shorting the reset line against a capacitor
  96.     leg.  Finally it started on the 48 inch monitor at the meeting and
  97.     displayed the color bars in al their glory.

  99.     In his presentation he shared with us that the presence of the
  100.     color bars is proof of a lot of success and that many parts and
  101.     circuits are properly working.  It really was quite impressive and
  102.     a big crown gathered at the end of his presentation.  Chuck went
  103.     in to the details of the soft ware of which I am not expert enough
  104.     to elaborate on.

  106.     The other speaker was our out of town guest who last spoke ten
  107.     years ago when he released F83X which is an extension of the F83
  108.     system of that year.

  110.     This year Wil Baden showed a Forth system based on ANS forth with
  111.     exceptions to the standard.  I was impressed with the fact that
  112.     many more words work nicely regardless of the mode.  That is to
  113.     say that they work both via the interpreter and the compiler.
  114.     Words such as IF ELSE THEN DO LOOP CASE and so on.  It includes
  115.     words that will call "C" libraries and other features that will
  116.     advance the state of the art.  Money is secondary in this release
  117.     but he is not distributing it till the documentation book is
  118.     completed.  The soft ware will be included on a disk in the back
  119.     of the book.  Projected price is $25.00

  121.     Let me encourage you all to sit down at the keyboard and enter a
  122.     message for the net.  Most of us are passive readers.  I find the
  123.     only way I can get myself to respond is to write my thoughts
  124.     before I call the net, other wise I am filled with others ideas
  125.     and don't get around to responding unless I can find a system that
  126.     enables an off line reader.

  128.     In that light I am still shocked that I can't find any one who has
  129.     an off line mail reader for DOS. I have browsed other conferences
  130.     and asked a few questions an nothing has turned up.  The best off
  131.     line reader I have experienced used the QWK mail packets and was a
  132.     function of the Computer Continuum which has since ceased
  133.     operations in SF although the parent system still runs in LA which
  134.     is a bit far for my budget.

  136.     Long range one of the goal of the "Programmable BBS" may be to get
  137.     a feed of the Forth Net for our system.  B0b Lee in novato had
  138.     previously offered us a feed that sounded to be some what of a not
  139.     automatic operation.  When we get on line we may ask for
  140.     opportunities for a feed.  We also may use the Programmable BBS to
  141.     archive the "best of Forth messages" so that persons new to Forth
  142.     can get up to speed.

  148.     estimating system every day which is written and compiled in
  149.     Forth.  He has been using and enjoying Forth since 1981 and was
